A Tony Award winning musical

On 17th May, Hope Mill Theatre, Manchester's new independent theatre and event space based in Ancoats' Grade II listed Hope Mill, launches its first in house musical theatre production: the Tony Award winning Parade produced by Hope Mill's co-owners Joseph Houston and Will Whelton.

Daring, innovative and bold, Parade, with a cast led by Tom Lloyd (Sell A Door's Seussical, Stiles and Drew's Just So) and Laura Harrison (Peter Pan, Blood Brothers) is filled with soaring music and a heart-wrenching story, offering a moral lesson about the dangers of prejudice and ignorance that should not be forgotten.

In 1913, Leo Frank (Lloyd), a Brooklyn-raised Jew living in Georgia, is put on trial for the murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker under his employ. Already guilty in the eyes of everyone around him, a sensationalist publisher and a janitor's false testimony seal Leo's fate. His only defenders are a governor with a conscience and, eventually, his Southern wife, Lucille (Harrison) who finds the strength and love to become his greatest champion.

With a story from acclaimed playwright Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy) and a rousing, colorful and haunting score by Jason Robert Brown (Songs For A New World, The Last Five Years, Bridges Of Madison County), Parade is a moving examination of the darkest corners of America's history.

To be able to create the show from scratch with new cast, sets, costumes, lighting and sound design, all for Hope Mill Theatre is a dream come true and I have no doubts it will be a show not to be missed!

Co-owner Joseph Houston says: "Parade was my graduating show when I left Mountview Academy in London; I loved it then and I love it even more now. To be able to create the show from scratch with new cast, sets, costumes, lighting and sound design, all for Hope Mill Theatre is a dream come true and I have no doubts it will be a show not to be missed".

Hope Mill Theatre co-owner and choreographer of Parade, William Whelton, says: "Parade is a very challenging show to choreograph as unlike your typical musical when there are large dance breaks and a choreographer just thinks about dance, this is almost a play with music which tells a true story and these characters are in real life situations."

"I gave the actors an idea of movement and hints of choreography but really wanted them to find the rest for themselves and develop it in their own way to keep that sense of believability. I think the cast and creative team have done a great job and I know people will fall in love with this epic show".

Set designer Victoria Hinton has taken her passion for the time period, the landscape, materials and the rawness of the story and created a simple but stunningly crafted set which completely envelopes the theatre space. Audiences will be transported to that time and place and see and feel exactly how the characters lived.

The look and layout of the theatre space is so flexible that it can be moulded to suit each individual production, which gives each and every audience a completely immersive experience.
