Little Sparrow & Robin Dewhurst combine to re-work pop classic

'Trying Different Ways' ~ Little Sparrow & Robin Dewhurst combine to re-work a pop classic

A first appearance at a hugely popular festival like Kendal Calling was always going to be an important moment in itself for singer/songwriter Little Sparrow.

Appearing on the Saturday line up for the 'Tim Peaks FM' event - (part of Tim Peaks project created by Tim Burgess of Charlatan's fame) she was invited to be part of a morning of live music, interviews and more - hosted by BBC Radio 6 presenter Chris Hawkins.

More was to come however as the team at Kendal Calling asked Little Sparrow (Katie Ware) to join forces with the highly talented composer and musician Robin Dewhurst along with her regular musical collaborator - cellist Sarah Dale to create and play a live cover version of 'Baggy Trousers' - a massive 1980's chart success for Madness.

As unlikely a choice of song for them as it may have seemed, their live version was brilliantly received on the day and in addition they also created a recorded version of the song which was met with an amazingly positive reaction when played on his radio show by Chris Hawkins soon after.

This version takes a well known, larger than life pop song and transforms it - through Katie's pure & beautiful vocal, the exquisite piano of Robin, the haunting sound of Sarah's cello and the expert production of Jonny Lexus - into a work of gentle but powerful melancholy.

(It is) one of the best cover versions we have heard in years!

As a result of the interest shown the track has been released as a free download for a limited period of one week and is available here:

The team at Kendal Calling & Tim Peaks FM also had this to say:

"The gang first heard Robin’s version of (ABBA classic) 'The Winner Takes It All' (performed with Blossoms) on Radio 1 and we tracked him down and invited him to play at Kendal Calling.

We got talking music and covers and how we felt that 'Baggy Trousers' rather than being a crackers, knockabout fun anthem was actually a wistful and haunting look back at days gone by.

Robin and Little Sparrow performed the song live to a spellbound crowd on Chris Hawkins’ Tim Peaks FM Show, creating a real Kendal Calling 2016 moment. (It is) one of the best cover versions we have heard in years!"
