Damsels In Distress by Stanley Chow

From Thursday 5th December to Wednesday 8th January, acclaimed Manchester illustrator Stanley Chow will be exhibiting his latest collection, Damsels In Distress, at Kosmonaut in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, returning to the site of his first solo exhibition back in 1996.

The collection of illustrations, based around iconic women, has been created especially for Kosmonaut and will be launched on Thursday 5th December in an evening view.

Stanley Chow on Damsels In Distress: “The idea for the exhibition initially stemmed from wanting to create illustrations for my daughter, who like most young children, is going through a Disney phase. I created my take on the famous character of Snow White, which then lead onto my depiction of Rapunzel.

“Those illustrations were a great starting point for my collection of illustrations loosely based around the theme of Damsels In Distress.

“ My first ever exhibition was in the same establishment as Kosmonaut back in 1996, called ‘Stan’s People’. It’s exciting to be exhibiting there after so much has happened in my career."

This is the latest exhibition from Stan Chow, who has been a freelance illustrator since the late 90’s. Born and raised in Manchester, he began DJing in café’s and bars, eventually designing posters and flyers for club nights all over the city and beyond. He was then invited to create fashion illustrations in teen magazines such as Just 17, Sugar and More.

Stan’s career took a giant leap in 2008 when he designed limited edition USB’s for the release of White Stripe’s Icky Thump album, which earned him a Grammy Award nomination in design.

Fast-forward to 2013 and Stan has produced works for, among many, BBC, McDonalds, Vodaphone and BT. He is also a regular contributor to the New Yorker Magazine.

Each of the illustrations exhibited at Kosmonaut will be available to purchase in various sizes on the night and from http://www.thestanleychowprintshop.com.

The exhibition will be launched on Thursday 5th December in an evening view from 6pm-9pm at Kosmonaut Bar. The soundtrack will be provided by The Damsel Sister DJs . The exhibition runs until Wednesday 8th January.
