A new spectator sport comes to Manchester – live competitive painting

Some of the UK’s bravest artists have been tasked with creating a masterpiece in only 30 minutes while 200 movers & shakers circulate and watch the art evolve. The audience will play their part, deciding which artist should progress to the grand final at the end of each round, by voting for their favourite piece.

The evening is the brainchild of Didsbury couple John Macaulay and Sophie McNeill. The couple combined their expertise; with Sophie a keen artist and art historian and John a cultural events specialist who was behind last year’s Greater Manchester Film Festival and the Music For Cities gig at Manchester Cathedral. John said, “There’s an eclectic mix of artists travelling to Manchester from across the country for the first Art Battle, each of whom will be laying themselves bare by revealing every intimate detail of their creative process.”

It is hoped that the close proximity of the audience coupled with friendly rivalry between artists will fuel creative motivation and maybe even create some ‘Art Stars’ along the way. On a more practical note, Sophie commented, “I’ve never worked with John before, so hopefully it will only be the artists who end up battling!”

One of the artists signed up is Graham Hudson, who also doubles up as Creative Programmes Manager at local charity Mustard Tree. Mustard Tree, who work with the homeless and marginalized across Greater Manchester, are the nominated charity for the first Art Battle Manchester. Proceeds of a silent auction, of all the work created on the night, will be split between the artists and Mustard Tree.  Graham said,

We’re thrilled to be the charity partner for the city’s first Art Battle. It promises to be an evening of great art, great company and a great vibe. I’m not at all fazed by taking part, but I’ve booked the following week off work as a stress precaution!

The Art Battle is being kindly supported by Fred Aldous, suppliers of materials to people who make things, in the heart Manchester’s most creative community – The Northern Quarter.
