Kevin enjoyed unrivalled access to the band for 3 years ~ from their first gig in May 1977 to front man, Ian Curtis' untimely death in May 1980. These stunning photographs have become synonymous with the band and their public persona, as the band’s influence has become increasingly important. This exhibition is not to be missed by any Joy Division fan.
The private viewing for Exemplar: Joy Division will be on Thursday 5th January 6-9pm (invite only ~ complimentary drinks will be served). This exhibition will be open to the public the following day, which is the date that Kevin did the - now legendary - photoshoot of Joy Division on Hulme Bridge in the snow, January 1979.
Kevin studied photography for four years in Salford. He then embarked on a career which has spanned a broad spectrum of work across the UK ~ from The National Theatre to Manchester City Football Club. Kevin has contributed to numerous UK publications, including: The Times, The Observer, The Guardian, Esquire, Maxim, Elle, Vogue, Mojo, FourFourTwo and The Big Issue. He spent 10 years as the chief photographer for the New Musical Express and was a founding contributor to The Face, the influential style magazine where he won an award for Magazine Cover of the Year. Kevin's work can be seen gracing many record sleeves and book jackets and he regularly contributes to various publications worldwide.
Kevin will also be in conversation with Joy Division/New Order's Stephen Morris on Saturday 7th January at the Manchester School of Photography, Tariff Street. The event starts at 2pm, where a short documentary will be shown about Kevin's work with Joy Division, followed by Stephen and Kevin talking about the history of their 35 year working relationship right up to the present day. There will be plenty of time for questions from the audience before Kevin and Stephen sign copies of Kevin's recent Joy Division monograph. This book is the definitive collection of Joy Division photographs, together with rare band ephemera.
Tickets for this special event will be £5 and restricted to 100 people. (The ticket price will be deducted from the book price, if it is purchased). They are available from Manchester Photographic Gallery or the School of Photography.
