Michelle Mone OBE Interview

Michelle Mone OBE Interview

Bra Queen Michelle Mone OBE recently revealed the secrets of her success to Peter Jones in a new primetime BBC show. A fly-on-the-wall documentary, Peter Jones: How we made our Millions

A fly-on-the-wall documentary

Jones explores the incredible journeys of two of the UK’s biggest entrepreneurs, Michelle and also Richard Reed – founder of Innocent Drinks – to find out how they built up their multi-million pound business empires.

In the documentary, mogul Peter Jones and his film crew follow Michelle over a period of five months, tracking her incredible journey as a teenager growing up in a tenement in Glasgow’s east end leaving school with no qualifications to becoming one of the UK’s most successful businesswomen with a non-stop schedule.

Michelle has grown her business, MJM International, into a global operation with campaigns fronted by Helena Christensen, Mel B, Sarah Harding and its newest face Luisana Lopilato – wife of Michael Buble.

She is also currently developing the Ultimo Beauty range which is set to launch in 2012 and plans for Ultimo Perfume and tanning products are in the pipeline.

Michelle said:
“I was a bit nervous about being filmed in a documentary style and at six foot seven it wasn’t easy to forget that Peter was following me around – he even took me to the tenement where I grew up and knocked on the door.

“But I couldn’t believe how relaxed I was – it was an amazing experience looking back at 15 years ago when Ultimo started, where the journey has taken us from then to now and where we are going from here – it’s an exciting time for the brand.”

Peter Jones CBE added:
“As an entrepreneur myself, making this show was an intriguing journey, getting into the minds of two fascinating business people to see what makes them tick. I hope people will enjoy seeing two very different but very inspirational ways to make millions.”

Our beauty writer Rebecca Lee interviewed Michelle,
here's what she had to say...

What does lingerie mean to you?

It’s the foundation of how you look and feel as it’s the first thing you put on in the morning and the right fit and style can do wonders for your shape and confidence.

Recently you teamed up with Tesco to launch the new range Bra Queen, what makes this different from the other lingerie lines you already have?

Bra Queen is a more accessible fashion forward collection designed for the supermarket clothing range that I created exclusively for Tesco. With bras starting at £12 and a design style for a range of tastes, shoppers can pick up a quality designer lingerie set without a royal price tag.

I believe you have a beauty range coming out early next year. What inspired you to venture into the beauty realm?

It’s a natural progression and something I had started thinking about a while ago. Ultimo is all about femininity and making the most of what you have, and the beauty range will also take inspiration from that ethos.

What kind of beauty products will you be selling within the new range?

We will have several innovative bodycare products and gorgeous pampering bathroom products.

Like the Ultimo brand will the beauty products ooze luxury and indulgence?

The products are designed to help make you feel fabulous and we have some innovation-led products as well. I’m so excited about the launch of Ultimo Beauty.

What’s your typical beauty regime in the morning?

I always try to drink plenty of water throughout the day when I’m on the move and I always take my makeup off at night no matter how tired I am.

Are there any products you couldn’t live without?

I think everyone should invest in a good moisturiser – whatever your preference is but make sure it is suited to your skin type that you stick to your routine.

Have you ever had a beauty disaster/regret?

I have had a couple of fake tan disasters in my time – always remember only to put the tiniest amount on your hands and even add a little moisturiser.
