Joe O’Byrne Acting Class

From Monday 19th July, 2010, actor/director and writer Joe O’Byrne will be running an acting class from Salford Arts Theatre from 7pm to 10pm.

He's had extensive experience as a stage/screen actor/director and writer and in between his acting and writing he has had six years teaching experience in TV/Theatre Acting and film making at various educational establishments including Warrington Collegiate and Salford University, he is also a PDGE Level 6 qualified teacher. He also has an extensive range of contacts in the media and film/theatre around the region. The school will offer classes in stage and screen acting and will be aimed both at the beginner testing the waters to the professional actor honing their skills, covering all ages 18+.

The class will cover a wide range of aspects, providing you
with the skills required for acting on both stage & screen.

Joe plans to shoot a short film with the class to showcase the skills they have picked up in the weekly class. The class will also offer advice on auditioning and getting an agent and over time various scenes will be shot to help students compile an actor’s showreel. Joe will also be arranging periodical showcases to which local casting directors and agents will be invited.

Says Joe: ‘I took a decision 12 years ago and walked away from a successful retail management career to pursue a career in acting. It was a huge gamble for me. I’ve come a long way and I’ve still got a long way to go, but it’s the best move I ever made. I discovered I could act, write, direct and teach but it took a big step to enable me to make those discoveries. I’m not advocating people walking away from careers but what I am offering is a choice to come and have a go.

You may be a curious beginner wondering just how easy it is or if you’ve got what it takes, you may be a practising actor looking for an environment to hone your skills or to generate new material for your showreel, or you may be looking to improve your self confidence and make a new circle of friends.

We live in a stressful world acting can be a great form of stress release. Behind The Mask will offer something positive for everyone and a chance to interact with all types of characters. There are roles here from all walks of life and all age groups from 18 to 98, you are never too old to act and new careers in acting can start at any age…all it needs is that first step…and that is up to you.‘

Joe’s TV acting credits include Coronation Street,
Emmerdale, Phoenix Nights, Clocking off, Cutting It, Heartbeat, Hollyoaks, The Royal, A&E, The Cops and Brookside.

Stage credits include The Weir, I'm Frank Morgan, Chameleons, Epsom Downs, The Grapes of Wrath and The Roots of Love. His film credits include leading roles in the recently released Diary of a Bad Lad (available everywhere on DVD now) and the self penned feature film Lookin’ For Lucky which was shot ‘wild’ on the streets of Bolton.

As a writer and director Joe is best known for his Paradise Heights series of plays and films - The Bench, Rank, I'm Frank Morgan and Lookin' For Lucky - all productions that have been well received by critics and audiences alike.

Classes will take place every Monday at SALFORD ARTS THEATRE, Kemsing Walk, off Liverpool Street, Salford, M5 4BS. They are priced at £15 per 3 hour weekly session.
