Manchester crowned North West capital of comedy

Manchester has beaten off fierce competition from rivals Liverpool to become the North West capital of comedy. 58% of people from Manchester see themselves as funny...

New research reveals over half of Mancuians find
themselves funny in comparison to other regions.

Research carried out on behalf of Foster’s amongst 2000 UK adults to celebrate the lager brand’s sponsorship of the British Comedy Awards, revealed that 58% of people in Manchester find themselves funny whilst only 47% of Liverpudlians consider themselves to be something of a comedian.

Out of the nationwide research Bristol considered themselves the least funny (24%) and were also least likely to go and see live comedy, with 81% admitting they never go to live shows.

The research revealed that the average Brit thinks they make family, friends and work mates laugh around six times a day, with a cocky 5% claiming they get laughs at least 16 times a day – or around once an hour. One in ten however, has absolutely no confidence in their ability to provoke laughter and say they never make people laugh.

The research also unveiled the nation’s comedy tastes, with Brits favouring high-brow observational comedy more than anything else. The top five types of comedy are :

· Observational comedy – 28%
· Witty sarcasm – 17%
· Slapstick – 10%
· Black comedy – 9%
· Toilet humour - 8%

The majority of Brits also favour comedy on TV more than any other type of programme, with a third choosing a sit com, sketch show or comedy quiz show above all other programmes.

What’s more, it appears laughter really is the best medicine, as over 60% of Brits claimed that a good joke puts them in a better mood for the day; 30% admit to using a dose of comedy to chuckle away their problems and one in five confirm that comedy brings them closer to their friends.
