Hooky

The former bass man at New Order, co-owner of the most well known club in the world and in recent times, author and DJ.

linePeter Hook wouldn’t call it a career- he’d call it his life. The former New Order bass man arrived at the NOISE free Arts Lab on Market Street last night, presenting creatives with an intimate opportunity to forensically cross examine his life and the role he played in shaping Manchester.

He arrived just moments after Doug Fishbone, the visual artist famous (or infamous) for filling Trafalgar Square and other cosmopolitan hot-spots with 1000’s of banana’s, packed up his laptop fraught with images, many of them which he used to deliver his hour long interactive session.

NOISE’s guests are of the calibre that robust numbers turn up to their weekly sessions and last night was no different. Any bystander couldn’t overlook the devout Hook fans interspersed throughout the room, donning their tribal raving colours- all clasping fluorescent copies of his book, ‘The Hacienda- How not to run a club.’

Peter’s talk wasn’t particularly insightful. But then again it wasn’t designed to be. People turned out to see the living legend, who these days, can only be seen in the flesh behind a set Technics or on TV screens. He won’t be the first to admit that the aura of admiration he has engendered over the last 20 or so years has stemmed out of his barefaced ordinariness. Him and his accomplices achievements have inspired films, songs and in his latest project, a new club.

According to NOISE’s website, the event was part of Flux Magazine’s ‘Guest Editor’ slot. NOISE were excited to reveal that renowned bass guitarist Peter Hook will be offering his words of wisdom at an exclusive Q n A session put on by Flux Editor Lee Taylor. The event was open to all young creatives wanting to pick up unique advice to follow in the footsteps of this musical legend- but I must admit there were some Hacienda old-timers in there hoping to catch a glimpse of the man who had led the rebellion.

NOISE said: “Peter remains energetically devoted to music, rock and roll and the experiences that his three decade career has given him, with bands like Joy Division, New Order, Revenge, Monaco and Freebass, and now as a director of the new Manchester indie rock and roll club at the old Factory Head Offices, FAC 251 The Factory.

Hooky’s been-there, seen-more-than-it all thirty years in the business has seen his bass playing redefine the role and inspire countless young musicians across seminal classics such as “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, “Atmosphere”, “Ceremony”, “Thieves Like Us”, “Regret”, “What Do You Want From Me?” and more.

With the honour of being portrayed in two major films “24 Hour Party People” and “Control”, Hooky has recently completed recording work on his upcoming  Freebass project, has been Djing throughout the UK, Europe and the world, and also released his debut book “The Hacienda – How Not To Run A Club” to great critical acclaim in late 2009.

Along with old friend Tokyo Industries Aaron Mellor, Hooky is a co-owner of FAC 251 The Factory and it was with the acquisition of the old Factory Head Offices, Aaron persuaded Hooky that now was the time for him to re-enter the club game. Hooky is to be presenting nights, performing at the club and as well as booking for the venue.”

Hooky also revealed that his latest single will be finally released today on Factory’s website- as always Manchester Gossip has the exclusive.
