Created by Joe Simon and Jack 'King' Kirby the character 'Captain America' was originally put together for Timely Comics in 1941. With the world plunged into war with Germany and the Empire of Japan, Captain America became an instant success.
The first issue of March 1941 featured the original origin of Captain America along with the introduction of 'Bucky' Captain Americas sidekick and his arch enemy the Red Skull. Unfortunately with World War Two over popularity declined as did many other Super Heroes only to be re-introduced through the fifties to again take the fight against not Germany but apparent widespread Communism.
and again interest slowed resulting in Marvel cancelling the line up to three times. Only with the 9/11 terrorist attacks did Captain America re-emerge as what he was originally created for 'truth, justice and the American way.
This movie is not Captain Americas first foray into the movie medium with attempts made in 1944, 1970 and 1990 with dismal results.
The anticipation for this latest outing was extremely high being the fifth and last instalment (Hulk,Thor and Iron Man 1&2) for the up-coming 'Avengers'. It had to work !!
With great casting: Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Hugo Weaving as Johan Schmidt/Red Skull and Tommy Lee Jones. This movie could not fail... or could it?
we embarked on a journey to witness Steve Rogers become Captain America.
Steeped in a wealth of history it was refreshing to see a new angle on the U.S. Military dabbling in Sci-Fi methods to help win the War. It has become quite well known in recent years that in the latter part of 1942 and early 1943 that the Allies were still thinking of methods of Defence rather than offence and indulging in all weird and wonderful theories to turn the tide against the Axis. The now infamous 'Philadelphia Experiment' springs to mind.
The movie plays out well albeit a little camp in parts and dare I say it.... a little too gung-ho but a great and entertaining movie all round. However I did feel, that this movie has been upstaged by the previous instalment 'Thor'. Maybe it's because we are more familiar with the character Captain America than Thor... I'm not sure. This said anyone like myself in their mid to late thirties will remember the explosion of the late 1970's when Marvel Comics finally managed to produce Marvel Comics U.K. realising there were kids here in the U.K. too who wanted these heroes at the breakfast table on a wet Thursday morning before school.
Overall a very good attempt and a very
